Tencent’s instant messaging platform QQ is to feature mini-programs from June. QQ was the first Tencent social platform and was subsequently overtaken by WeChat in terms of popularity and user numbers. However, QQ has never really gone away, and in Tencent’s recent earnings report was reported as having exceeded the 700 million mobile user mark, meaning it still retains a significant user base among Chinese consumers. Adding mini-program functionality brings QQ in line with numerous other leading platforms that are exploiting the convenience the elements bring to add eCommerce features to their apps.
