TikTok operator ByteDance is leveraging the popularity of its short-video app in two key markets to introduce a new music-centred app. The Resso app was soft-launched six months and now has around 27,000 installs per Sensor Tower data. However, the app has only been promoted seriously in the past month. Significantly, Resso appears to have been developed as a non-China product, unlike TikTok which is an international version of its domestic Douyin app. Resso appears to be an attempt to land-grab in the music streaming space in markets where giants like Apple and Spotify have yet to make an impact.
