Amazon has announced plans to open grocery stores in Seattle, California, Chicago and Washington D.C. Some of the stores will feature conventional checkout systems while a few others will have automated checkout facility. In line with its strategy, Amazon is opening an Amazon Go grocery store in Redmond, Seattle which will feature cashier-less checkout technology and overhead cameras to keep track of customer purchases.

In March 2020, Amazon reached out to other prominent US retailers such as Walmart and Target to collaborate on cashier-less, automated stores; however, the proposal was declined.
